Description

Alpen Retro Winter Booties are just the fashionable footwear you need for your winter vintage outfits. These booties are based on original Montgomery Ward overshoes, also known as galoshes, but are made as regular boots. We've stayed faithful to the velveteen upper and houndstooth lining, opting to use ethically sourced sheepskin trim and leather foxing and heel. These beautiful boots are cozy and practical for winter wear, with rubber soling.

2nd Winter with my boots!

~Santa~ gifted this pair of booties to me last Christmas. And I’ve cherished them since!
I am so grateful these are made in half sizes too, I often have to deal with a squishy 10 or a roomy 11. So it’s always a relief to have a 10.5! I wish these were in more colors that I could incorporate into my wardrobe (an olive/ivory trim, or full chocolate brown shoe+trim anyone?).
I can’t believe how comfortable they are as well, truly a testament to good craftsmanship as I’ve walked for hours in these back to back and have no foot pain or discomfort.
Also note: I applied the water resistant spray before first wear and I’m happy to report they returned to virtually the same color after drying.

And American Duchess team, if you read this, please consider the chocolate brown and/or olive/ivory colors in the future!

Gorgeous Shoes, Not Great in the Snow

These shoes are stunning! They look incredible with lots of clothes, but if you are thinking that these would be good in poor weather, they absolutely would not be! They run small, so I would very much recommend sizing up (I sized up a size and a half to fit thicker socks). I have never found a pair of American Duchess shoes that did not require sizing up and I consistently run at the same size for all other shoe brands I regularly wear (Hokka, LL Bean, Sezane, Keds, Draper James, and Betsey Johnson), but always have to size at least one full size up with American Duchess. I tried purchasing waterproofers from American Duchess and my local cobbler, but these shoes cannot withstand anything resembling moisture. I've had them cleaned several times and I've owned them for just a few months. They're still gorgeous and I will continue to wear them, especially throughtout the colder months.

We're so glad you that you've found a size that works for your foot!

As many folks look at reviews for sizing guidance, we do have to note that for most folks, ordering a whole size or a whole size and a half up would not be recommended. Our extensive data analysis of orders and return reasons shows that for most people find that they fit true to size, and when people order a whole size up from their usual size in heels, they almost always return them! Of course, feet are complex objects and everyone has different shapes to their feet, which might explain why your feet in particular might require a size up in some styles. As always, we encourage anyone who's unsure of their size to reach out to us at info@americanduchess.com.

Please also keep in mind that none of our shoes are waterproof. Leather and velveteen can't be made waterproof, as it's always going to be absorbent to some extent. Our shoes can be somewhat water resistant by use of a spray such as the Angelus water and stain repellent, but this only helps raindrops sheet off somewhat more than they otherwise would, and does nothing to prevent water from coming in the seams. A little bit of rain or snow isn't going to hurt your shoes, but they never wants to be soaked. If you do get your shoes wet, never dry them with a heat source, as this can shrink and dry out the leather and cause irreversible damage. Instead, open them up fully and let them air dry.

Love!!!

I've been looking at these boots for as long as I can remember and just looked at them. After seeing my size become out of stock in the other colors I knew I couldn't wait longer or I'd be so regretful for missing out. I'm so glad I didn't wait any longer. These are the cutest boots and very comfortable!! If there were 10s still available I'd get a second pair.
If you've been looking at these and they're in your size I recommend to not wait.
I'm ready for cooler weather to wear these out.

Lovely boots!

This is my second pair! The first are red and black and a half size smaller which are great with nylons. The Black ones are a bit bigger to allow for actual socks. Both are fabulous! They both fit a bit tighter than expected but I have wide feetand they will stretch out with use. .
